Intent

At Rockcliffe, we aim for our children to develop as responsible citizens, confident individuals and successful learners. Our curriculum in RE is designed to support these aims. We intend for all of our children to deepen their knowledge and understanding by exploring different religions, cultures and worldviews, and responding to them. We want our children to have opportunities to be curious and to have confidence to be able to express their beliefs and worldviews. We aim for our children to promote compassion and tolerance in our community.  We hope this in turn will enable them to develop, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.

Implementation

At Rockcliffe, our curriculum is designed on the Approved Syllabus for North Tyneside, supported by the knowledge and expertise within our school community so that learning is maximised for all children. We have some additional units to represent the make up of our school community so all of our children understand the beliefs and views of their friends and wider Rockcliffe Family. The curriculum is underpinned by key concepts set out in the Approved Syllabus for North Tyneside; Belief, Expressions of Belief, Authority and Impact of Belief.  The curriculum is delivered through weekly lessons and enhanced through assemblies, visitors and educational visits. We use Big Questions and key topics to provide anchors for our units of learning and promote pupils’ curiosity, knowledge and understanding. We aim for our lessons to be open and discussion based to allow children to think, respond and reflect.  We use Big Books to record the opinions, reflections and knowledge our children acquire through a unit. The children then use these books to refer back to, and reflect on, previous thoughts and learning.

Assessment 

We aim to ensure that children meet Age Related Expectations from our milestones and develop critical thinking to apply this to other areas of the curriculum. We aim to ensure that children meet Age Related Expectations from our milestones.  We assess pupils’ progress using an ongoing process of observation, listening and questioning, supplemented by discussions, written activities and quizzes, as appropriate. At the end of each year, summative assessments are. These are used in the following year in planning appropriate activities and adaptations which meet the needs of all pupils.

Impact

 Through carefully planned learning activities, children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding in RE. Our children:

· demonstrate increasing knowledge and understanding of both religious and non-religious worldviews

· become increasingly able to respond to both religious and non-religious worldviews in an informed and insightful way

· are able to reflect on their own ideas and the ideas of others in an age-appropriate way.

Children demonstrate confidence in RE. They are keen to find out about different beliefs and traditions, exploring others’ ideas and responding to them in a reflective manner, and gaining a deeper sense of their own beliefs, religious or otherwise. Almost all children make expected progress across and between each year. Pupils not meeting, or exceeding, Age Reelated Expectations are supported and challenged appropriately so as to allow them to flourish within the subject.
